Breast enlargement in men is called gynecomastia. This disorder, which occurs at all ages, is caused by hormonal changes, genetic factors, obesity and overweight, or the use of certain medications. Gynecomastia lowers a person’s self-esteem, and in some cases, people even have difficulty performing certain physical activities.

Gynecomastia, can occur at different ages for men. If this complication occurs for them at a young age, there is a chance of spontaneous treatment and up to 90% of cases, no special treatment is needed. But if this phenomenon occurs to them in adulthood, its disappearance will be possible only through surgery which is called Male breast reduction or Gynecomastia Surgery. Good Candidates for Male breast reduction or Gynecomastia Surgery are men that:

  • Despite following other treatments, they did not feel any change in the size of their breasts
  • They are physically healthy
  • Did not use tobacco or other addictive substances
  • They have realistic and positive expectations of the outcome of the surgery
  • They have an ideal and balanced body weight
  • Their breasts are fully developed
  • They are ashamed of the size of their breasts

The prevalence of gynecomastia is estimated at 36%, which is due to an increase in breast adipose tissue as well as stromal duct tissue. This complication may occur in both breasts of men and sometimes only on one side. Possible causes of this complication include the following:

  • Weight Gain
  • Hormonal changes
  • Inheritance
  • Liver disease
  • Taking some medications
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Deficiency of some vitamins
  • Existence of a tumor in the breast

Gynecomastia Diagnose

When a patient visits a doctor for treatment of gynecomastia, the specialist determines the type of treatment for the patient by evaluating some factors. Among the things that should be done before any large breast treatment in men are:

  • Evaluation of the patient’s liver condition
  • Evaluation of the patient’s thyroid status
  • Evaluation of adrenal glands
  • Evaluation of patient kidney failure
  • The rate of glandular prolapse
  • Evaluation of patient’s breast fat
  • Examination of the patient’s glandular tissue
  • Check for excess skin
  • Investigation of nipple abnormalities

After evaluating the mentioned cases, the doctor can suggest the best treatment to the patient.

Different Types of Gynecomastia Treatments

There are two ways to treat gynecomastia. If this complication is only due to the increase of adipose tissue in the breast, it can be treated by exercising. Therefore, in this case, gynecomastia can be treated with exercise. But other methods of treating gynecomastia include:

  • Treatment of Gynecomastia with Medication: If this complication develops in a short time, drug treatment is recommended. And a person can treat gynecomastia by taking some medications. Of course, you should note that drug treatment will be effective for gynecomastia caused by hormonal changes, not gynecomastia caused by the accumulation of fat in the breast tissue; In this case, the person must use lipomatic surgery or liposuction to remove fat.
  • Treatment of Gynecomastia with Surgery: Gynecomastia surgery, which is actually a type of reduction mammoplasty, is recommended when there is no longer any possibility of recovery with medication. It should be noted that the best way to treat a complication of gynecomastia that has been going on for a long time is surgery.

Procedure of Gynecomastia Surgery

The doctor first prepares the patient for surgery by performing general anesthesia. Then, according to the lines that have been drawn on the patient’s chest before the surgery, he cuts the desired areas. It is important to note that if gynecomastia is caused by an increase in adipose tissue, surgery can only cure gynecomastia using liposuction. In this procedure, the surgeon breaks down excess fat using a cannula tube that has been inserted into the patient’s breast tissue and removes it with a suction device. It should be noted that the wound in this condition will not be clear. The duration of this surgery will be two hours, which will be performed under local anesthesia. There is no need to be hospitalized after the operation and the person can go home. After the surgery, the person should refrain from wearing tight and tight clothes for 2 weeks.

But if gynecomastia is not only due to excess fat, the incision should be used to remove extra tissue and skin. In some cases, both incision and liposuction are recommended for the treatment of gynecomastia.

Immediately after surgery, the results are obvious. Over time, the severity of the inflammation decreases and the stitches disappear and the patient is more satisfied with the outcome of the surgery. In other words, after three to six months, the results of this surgery will be completely clear.

Pre-Operative Care of Gynecomastia Surgery

Prior to surgery, the patient is required to observe and perform the following:

  • Perform laboratory blood tests and mammography.
  • Stop taking some medications and replace them with medications prescribed by your doctor
  • No smoking
  • Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements; as such drugs increase the risk of bleeding.

Post-Operative Care of Male breast reduction Surgery

  1. After surgery, an elastic bandage is placed over the sutures to protect the chest in addition to reducing inflammation.
  2. A small, thin tube is temporarily placed under the skin to collect excess blood and fluid.
  3. The tips provided by the physician regarding the care of the sutures or the use of medications should be followed in order to accelerate the healing process in addition to preventing infection.
  4. Inflammation and bruising are usually seen in the area up to two weeks after surgery.
  5. Regarding exercise and physical training, it should be said that it is recommended to postpone light activities for two weeks and heavy activities for three weeks. Of course, the point is that for four to six weeks, there should be no pressure on the upper body and breasts.
  6. Change your dressing daily and keep the surgical area clean.
  7. Take prescribed medications as directed by your doctor.
  8. Lying down and sleeping should be in a certain position for up to two weeks.
  9. The special medical cloth should be worn for one to two months after surgery.

  • Swelling
  • Bruising in some parts of the chest

  • numb

These complications are temporary and will subside 7 to 14 days after surgery.

Will there be a scar from the surgery?

In breast reduction surgery in men, the size of the scar depends on the surgical technique used. If liposuction is used, the incisions will be very small and will be located around the areola. The doctor does his best to achieve the best possible result with the least amount of scars.

Is gynecomastia the cause of all breast enlargement cases?

Gynecomastia is not the cause of all breast enlargement cases. False gynecomastia (pseudo-gynecomastia) is a complication in which the enlargement of the breasts is due to the accumulation of fat and not the growth of breast tissue. Your doctor will order tests to make sure the complication you are experiencing is gynecomastia. If you only have adipose tissue in your chest, just proper diet and exercise are recommended as the best treatment. If the problem persists over time, liposuction can be used to treat the problem.
